Ane Gerda Zahl Eriksson: No need to routinely prescribe opioids at discharge for surgical patients

Ane Gerda Zahl Eriksson, Gynecologic Oncologist at Norwegian Radium Hospital, shared a post by Trials and Audit in Surgery by Medical students in Australia and New Zealand (TASMAN Collaborative), on X/Twitter, adding:

No need to routinely prescribe opioids at discharge for surgical patients. OPRAS study demonstrated Opioids increased risk of return to hospital for opioid-related side effects and did not provide patient satisfaction.”

Quoting TASMAN Collaborative’s post:

Opioids at discharge after surgery:

  • No difference in satisfaction BUT
  • Risk of representations for side effects.

1st paper from the OPERAS study has been published BJS (formerly the British Journal of Surgery)! This global study adds to growing evidence for opioid-free analgesia on discharge.

Thank you to all the countless patients, collaborators, and team members who made this huge global collaboration possible!

  • 4273 patients,
  • 114 hospital,
  • 25 countries.”
