Vincent Rajkumar Reflects on Cancer’s Impact and the Importance of Support
Vincent Rajkumar, Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Chair for the Mayo Clinic, posted on X:
“Everyday I see how a diagnosis of cancer completely upends the lives of people and families.
For patients and families: The progress to cure and control cancer is proceeding at an amazing pace. It’s truly remarkable with the new targeted therapies and immunotherapy options. Be hopeful.
For oncologists: Our job is of course more than the right diagnosis or treatment. It’s also counseling and coordination of care so that patients and families know what to expect. We don’t have a crystal ball.
But we do know generally what to expect and providing that information (with all its caveats) greatly reduces anxiety and provides comfort. They also need to know how to reach us if there is a major question or urgent situation.”
