“It thrills me to have attended the inaugural Rural Cancer Institute’s Rural Cancer Conference in Lawrence, Kansas.
Huge shoutout to the founding members – Wade Swenson, Zachary Schroeder, Emily McGovern for this much needed endeavor!
Special thanks to Caroline Schroeder (Holgerson) and the entire RCI Team with young brains – Sahil Prakash Abigail Swenson Samson Mah Sean K. And others.
June 4- has been proclaimed as the RURAL CANCER AWARENESS Day in 12 states!
Thanks for inviting me to speak on value of Advocacy in Rural Cancer Care. We discussed:
- Clinical trial access- 70%US Counties don’t have access to a dongle clinical trial!
- Physician and staffing shortages – 66 percent rural counties have no oncologist
- 340b drug pricing- while the origination of this section under the 1992 Veterans Health care act was intended to stretch resources (by providing discount drug pricing) to vulnerable populations- this program has been stretched above and beyond its intended capacity and has been abused without the discounts benefiting our patients. This needs a reform.
We also discussed advocacy by organizations like American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Community Oncology Alliance, American Medical Association, American Cancer Society and even global policy/ advocacy by UICC and ICAN, International Cancer Advocacy Network.
We shared Dr Eric Small’s (Asco President- 2025-26) theme – “The Science of Practice and Translation- Improving Outcomes Worldwide”- bringing quality cancer care and research to every county and every country!!
Always great to connect with my bestie – Ruiling Yuan, MD and wonderful friend Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, MD —your energy and enthusiasm is contagious, and I loved your work on exercise oncology which shows survival benefit in rural patients- very much in line with the most talked article out of ASCO25 – CHALLENGE study by Dr Christopher Booth and team.
Also, wonderful to see Janette Merrill, who has been my oldest ASCO Staff friend.
Thanks so much for having me!!
Thanks to my husband Patrick Christie and my son Aryan Kamboj for coming with me all the way despite having your own many commitments.”
