Olubukola Ayodele: Cancer Isn’t Just a Diagnosis – It’s a Part of Life We All Need to Understand
Olubukola Ayodele, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Cancer is no longer the mystery it once was. And yet, for many, even saying the word feels heavy.
We don’t talk about it enough.
We avoid it. We whisper it.
We only speak when it’s already close, often too close!
But cancer isn’t just a diagnosis. It’s a part of life we all need to understand, whether we’ve faced it ourselves or not. Because silence doesn’t protect us: it delays action, fuels fear, and often costs lives.
It’s not always cancer that kills, sometimes, it’s the silence.
There’s a difference between awareness and literacy.
Awareness tells us cancer exists.
Literacy empowers us to understand it, recognise signs early, ask the right questions and seek help without fear.
This isn’t a message just for patients.
It’s for families, friends, colleagues and entire communities.
We need to normalise cancer conversations: not just in clinics and hospitals, but around kitchen tables, in places of worship, at work, at the salons/barbershops, doing grocery shopping and on social media.
Talking about cancer shouldn’t be taboo. It should be as normal as talking about the weather or your diet.
When we make it a part of everyday conversations, we reduce stigma, increase early detection, and create a culture of empowerment, not fear.
Let’s shift from silence to strength.
From fear to facts.
From reacting to preparing.
Because when we talk about cancer, we’re not inviting fear, we’re building resilience.
Let’s make cancer a conversation that belongs to everyone.
Mike Kinnaird and I are advocating for a culture shift. Silence is deadly! Help us by reposting this vital information.”
