Yesterday, 30th April 2025, the National Cancer Institute of Kenya, represented by Dr. Joan Simam, Ag. Director of Research partnered with the Meru County Government to launch a countywide free oesophageal cancer screening campaign.
This initiative was officially launched by Meru’s Health Services CECM, Dr. Dennis Mugambi, at St. Angela’s Nguthiru Grounds in Tigania East Sub-County, where he flagged off a mobile screening truck. The National Cancer Institute of Kenya will continue to support this program and assist other county governments in implementing similar initiatives.

The primary aim is to improve the early detection and treatment of oesophageal cancer within the county. Equipped with a surgeon, anaesthetist, and nurse, the mobile screening unit will offer endoscopy services across all sub-counties until May 23rd. In addition to this, Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) will maintain its weekly endoscopy services every Wednesday.
The National Cancer Institute of Kenya, under the leadership of Dr. Elias Melly has made cancer prevention and care a priority, addressing the high prevalence of breast, cervical, prostate, oesophageal, and colorectal cancers.
