Women have played an instrumental role in genetics and genomics research, and their contributions continue to shape the future of science. But despite the progress we’ve made, challenges still exist.

Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on three key areas:

1. The Impact of Women in Genetics and Genomics

Women have been at the forefront of groundbreaking discoveries in genetics and genomics, from Rosalind Franklin’s critical contributions to DNA structure to the many female scientists driving advancements in precision medicine and genetic therapies today. Our role in this field is not just significant—it is essential. Diverse perspectives lead to innovative solutions, and the growing presence of women in genetics strengthens the field as a whole.

2. Challenges and Opportunities for Women in Science

Despite these achievements, women in genetics and genomics still face challenges—whether it’s access to leadership positions, securing funding, or overcoming biases in STEM fields. However, these challenges also present opportunities. Many institutions and initiatives now focus on supporting women in science through mentorship, funding programs, and policy changes that promote gender equality.

We need to continue advocating for equal opportunities and creating environments where women can thrive.

3. Advice for Young Women Pursuing a Career in Genetics

To young women aspiring to enter this field:

Never underestimate the value of perseverance, mentorship, and collaboration.
Seek out mentors who inspire and guide you.
Build a strong support network of peers and colleagues.
And most importantly, believe in yourself.

Your contributions matter, your voice is important, and the future of genetics and genomics depends on diverse minds working together to solve complex problems.

Science needs you. The more diverse and inclusive we make this field, the stronger it becomes.
