Sarah Louden: Health Equity – Primary Care to Oncology
Sarah Louden, CEO and Founder of Total Health Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Health Equity: Primary Care to Oncology.
In past years, this program brought together multi-, inter-, and cross-disciplinary learners – filling rooms to tackle the challenges and opportunities in one of the nation’s poorest cities: Memphis.
This morning, I heard that out of 40 registrants, fewer than 15 showed up. I thought about making a general post on the importance of health equity, but the truth is – I’m upset.
I usually roll my eyes at ‘moral signaling’ posts, so if that’s your reaction, I get it. But I’m upset because this education matters. I’d argue it matters even more than ASCO or ESMO updates, or clinical in-servicing done by qualified sales reps.
I’m upset because poor, Black, and Brown people are dying from cancer at rates that make all those updates irrelevant if we don’t figure out why. Forums like this aim to do exactly that.
To everyone who showed up today – I see you, and I truly applaud you.
I think this is signaling a sad change to the commitment and focus to DEI programs in healthcare. We have to double down!!
My team at Total Health Oncology works tirelessly to plan and produce these meetings. You wouldn’t believe the effort it takes. And every one of the speakers lives this mission of health equity.
We’ll be posting this program for free so anyone can listen in – because this kind of education doesn’t just inform. It saves lives. Literally.”
