Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: An estimated 1 million children a year die because of wasting
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General at the World Health Organization, shared on LinkedIn:
“No child should go to bed hungry. And yet, 1 in 15 around the world are wasted. An estimated 1 million children a year die because of wasting. Many of us are parents. The thought of our own children suffering from malnutrition is intolerable.
The thought of anyone’s child suffering in this way is intolerable. That thought must drive us to action. And there is something we can do because these deaths are predictable and preventable.
Yesterday, World Children’s Day, I joined a UK-hosted Food Safety Summit in London, where the WHO launched new guidelines for countries to prevent and manage acute malnutrition.
We are calling for more integration of nutrition services into health systems and the strengthening of those health systems.”
