Donald McDonnell: The mechanisms by which estrogens manifest immunosuppressive activity

Donald McDonnell, Professor at the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke University School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn, about a paper by him and colleagues, published in BioRxiv.

“In previously published work from our laboratory Dr. Binita Chakraborty demonstrated that estrogens, acting through the estrogen receptor (ER) in tumor-associated macrophages, attenuate tumor immunity.

In this follow-up study she has defined the mechanisms by which estrogens manifest this immunosuppressive activity-work that highlights the potential clinical utility of Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) and Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs) beyond luminal breast cancer where they are currently used.”

“Estrogens increase cancer cell efferocytosis to establish an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment”

Authors: Binita Chakraborty, Prabuddha Chakraborty, Michael Brown, Ching-Yi Chang, Donald McDonnell et al.
