About Raphael Cuomo
Raphael E. Cuomo, Ph.D. is a professor and biomedical scientist at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, recognized for his expertise in cancer epidemiology and biomedical research. He earned his PhD in Global Health from UC San Diego and an MPH in Health Management and Policy from San Diego State University, with additional advanced training completed at Harvard University, Yale University, and the World Health Organization.
Professor Cuomo’s research focuses on the molecular and clinical epidemiology of cancer, integrating biostatistics and clinical informatics to address critical challenges in oncology and population health. His studies have examined the prognostic value of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in colon cancer prevention and survival, the role of genetic variants in the development of cancer risk factors, and disparities in the diagnosis and survival of cancer comorbidities among individuals with pre-existing substance use disorders. Dr. Cuomo has also contributed to the development of in vitro models for metabolic disorders and stochastic simulations for improving cost-effectiveness in cancer care.
A Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and board-certified in public health, Dr. Cuomo has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and serves in editorial roles with JMIR Infodemiology and Frontiers in Public Health. His work continues to shape evidence-based clinical practices and public health strategies, particularly for improving cancer prevention, early detection, and patient outcomes.
