Tuomas Tammela: Aging limits stemness and tumorigenesis by reprogramming iron homeostasis
Tuomas Tammela, Associate Member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, shared on X:
“Several years in the making (and aging),
Xueqian Zhuang’s study on aging is out today on Nature. She finds, surprisingly, that aging suppresses tumorigenesis and stemness in the lung by promoting a functional iron insufficiency in the alveolar epithelium.
Many thanks to all of our fantastic collaborators, especially Emily Wong and her team (special shoutout to Qing Wang!) – we could not have done this without you! We are indebted to The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research and Lung Cancer Foundation for taking a chance on us by funding a risky project early in the game.
Thanks very much to Tatiana Cañeque and Raphaël Rodriguez for an insightful News and Views on our paper!
A nice general summary of the work here by MSKCC’s very own Ian Demsky.”
