Maria Navarro: Adapting WHO’s GBCI framework to Cali’s unique context
Maria Navarro, Regional Director of Latin America at City Cancer Challenge Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Last week, we hosted the GBCI (Global Breast Cancer Initiative) workshop in Cali – a city leading the way in Latin America as the first City Cancer Challenge city in the region.
This event brought together international experts, local stakeholders, and decision-makers to adapt the WHO’s GBCI framework to Cali’s unique context.
With the support of global and regional partners such as World Health Organization PAHO/WHO, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization, ProPacífico and others, this workshop represented a critical step in aligning efforts and creating sustainable, evidence-based solutions aiming to reduce breast cancer mortality by 2.5% annually.
Highlights included:
- High-level, thoughtful and practical interactions between local and international experts around a complex and mature health system that needs localized interventions to reach improved patient outcomes, reinforcing hope!
- Good practices already in place that can be replicated locally and nationally, demonstrating the quality of local professionals and a collaborative spirit across the ecosystem.
Impressed and thankful with the level of commitment and attendance to the workshop of many of the national and local stakeholders already participating in breast cancer initiatives in Cali.
Thank you for the support of all of you, including Germán Escobar, Secretary of Health for Cali, Maria Cristina Lesmes Duque, Secretary of Health of Valle del Cauca, Carolina Wiesner Ceballos, Director of the National Cancer Institute; Andrea Pachón, representing the Ministry of Health, Adriana M. Robayo G. MD, our international experts Luis Fernando A. from PAHO, Miriam Mikhail Lette and Lisa Montel from IAEA and our C/Can gurus Alfredo Polo and Benjamin Anderson and numerous others who joined us for this milestone event.
Speacial thanks for a life lesson to Luis Alberto Soler Vanoy and Lizbeth Alexandra Acuña Merchán from the High-Cost Account.
Looking forward to continue working together, to align all efforts and show impactful change in breast cancer outcomes in our country!”
