Roupen Odabashian: The Tug Between Patient Care and Documentation

Roupen OdabashianAdvisor at Spiraldot Health and Mesh AI, shared on LinkedIn:

“In 2010, I began my journey in medicine, driven by a passion for understanding the human body and its complexities.

Medical school was fulfilling, and I graduated second in my class, eager to make a difference. But as I progressed from medical school to residency, fellowship, and eventually to an attending physician, the administrative demands grew with each step.

This burden has steadily drained the joy I once found in practicing medicine.

Studying medicine is intellectually stimulating, but the reality of practicing it is quite different.

My responsibilities toward my patients have grown, but so has the paperwork, creating a continuous tug between patient care and documentation.

I’ve tried using AI scribes—they help lessen the mental load of note-taking but barely save time.

The demands of practicing medicine feel like being in a relationship with an anxious partner, constantly needing attention and never quite allowing personal space.

I’m starting to question if this is truly sustainable in the long run.”
