Pawel Sobczuk about pharmaceutical wastage in the US on “One Health” column by ESMO
ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology shared a post on LinkedIn:
“ The United States waste an estimated $3 billion annually on unused Cancer Drugs, which is nearly half the budget of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This pharmaceutical wastage has significant environmental impacts.
Proper disposal of expired or unused medicines is crucial to avoid environmental pollution and reduce CO2 emissions associated with Oncology Therapies. Initiatives like redispensing unused medicines show promise in reducing waste and Environmental Impact, but broader implementation faces many challenges, from legal to practical ones.
Healthcare professionals can contribute by prescribing medications more thoughtfully and minimise waste.
