Patrick Hwu: Did you know that in some animals such as shellfish, cancers can spread from one organism to another?
Patrick Hwu, President and CEO at Moffitt Cancer Center, shared a post on X/Twitter:
“Did you know that in some animals such as shellfish, cancers can spread from one organism to another? This has not been documented in humans (except in rare cases of organ transplantation) and our well developed immune system would reject a cancer cell from someone else, in a reaction termed an alloresponse. And don’t worry, you can’t catch cancer from eating shellfish! Here’s an excellent article by the New York Times describing these cancers.”
