Trish Boh: Doug Flora is not only a dedicated physician but also a cancer survivor

Trish Boh, Executive Secretary to Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services & Directors at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“As some may know, Dr. Doug Flora is not only a dedicated physician but also a cancer survivor and advocate for comprehensive cancer care.

Dr. Flora, the Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services, recently shared a poignant reflection on his journey:

“As many of you know, I’m a cancer survivor (early-stage renal cell was resected over 6 years ago). I’m currently waiting on scan results from yesterday, and the dreaded “scanxiety” looms as I wait. It’s a stark reminder of something that AI cannot (yet) do—to calmly reassure as my own doctors have done.

So much of a cancer patient’s journey is emotional, even for this perpetually upbeat and optimistic patient/doctor.” Dr. Flora emphasizes that cancer care extends beyond treatments and scans.

At St. Elizabeth Healthcare we offer holistic support through 1:1 and group counseling in partnership with Cancer Family Care and Cancer Support Community. We also provide essential services such as a food pantry for patients facing food insecurity as well as access to a compassionate team of nurse navigators, social workers, dietitians, chaplains and massage therapists—all at no cost to our patients.

“Taking care of the mind is just as important as treating the body,” Dr. Flora says. “I’m grateful for the incredible team helping us provide truly comprehensive care. Dwinelva Zackery, Maggie Biesinger, Jill Settlemyre, Kelly Schoen, please keep leading with dedication to our mission and big hearts; your work is so important.”

We are proud to support our patients with Whole Person Care, addressing both mental and physical well-being. We are also grateful to have Dr. Flora on our staff and are pleased to share that his recent scans came back clean.”
