New population-based study on prostate cancer incidence and mortality in Europe – APCCC

“Prostate cancer incidence and mortality in Europe and implications for screening activities: population-based study out on The BMJ.

Population-based study provides a comparative assessment of prostate cancer epidemiology across 26 European countries from 1980 to 2017, highlighting significant variations in incidence rates driven largely by changes in PSA testing.

Incidence peaked around the mid-2000s, ranging from 46 to 336 cases per 100,000 men, with a decline in several countries afterward, though rates have started to rise again recently. Mortality rates were much lower and more stable, showing a steady decline across most countries.

The study emphasizes that the observed 20-fold variation in incidence, contrasted with a fivefold variation in mortality, points to potential overdiagnosis, underscoring the need for cautious and well-designed prostate cancer screening initiatives to minimize harms.”
