Indian Institute of Science faculty members received the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2024!

“Congratulations to my PhD mentor, Prof. G. Padmanabhan, on receiving India’s first Vigyan Ratna, the nation’s highest science award for lifetime achievement!”

Prof G Padmanaban, former Director of IISc, is the first recipient of the Vigyan Ratna, the top science award for lifetime achievement.

Prof Umesh Varshney (MCB) has received the Vigyan Shri, and Prof Aravind Penmatsa (MBU) and Prof Mahesh Kakde (Math) have received the Vigyan Yuva awards.”

Sendurai A. Mani is a distinguished Indian-American oncologist and molecular biologist. Currently holding the Dean’s Chair for Translational Oncology at Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School, Dr. Mani also serves as the Associate Director for Translational Oncology at the Legorreta Cancer Center at Alpert Medical School.

Dr. Mani’s research focuses on finding the mechanisms driving cancer metastasis and therapy resistance, particularly in breast cancer. He is renowned for his discovery of cancer stem cells and their role in tumor progression and treatment resistance.

Govindarajan Padmanaban is an Indian biochemist and biotechnologist. He is in the retired faculty of Biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Previously he was the Director at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He also earned his PhD from Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and M.Sc from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).

Aravind Penmatsa is an associate professor at the Indian Institute of Science. Previously he was a postdoctoral fellow at OHSU. He earned his PhD from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, India. 

Umesh Varshney is a molecular biologist and professor at the Indian Institute of Science. He was previously a Post-doctoral research associate at MIT and Medical Research post-doctoral fellow at Alberta Heritage Foundation.
