Merry Jennifer Markham: Change is essential for innovation, it’s time for that change
Merry Jennifer Markham, Professor of Medicine at the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Florida, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“After much reflection, I’ve announced that I’m stepping down from my role as Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Florida. I did not make this decision lightly.
My division is made up of incredible people, talented hematologists and oncologists, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done in the last six years. I’m excited to work alongside this team as the division and the UF Health Cancer Center evolve into something greater than we are now.
Leadership is not only about guiding a team through successes and challenges; it’s also about knowing when to step aside and make room for new ideas and fresh perspectives. Change is essential for innovation. It’s time for that change.
To quote Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s 40th Prime Minister, ‘I am not leaving because it was hard. Had that been the case I probably would have departed two months into the job. I am leaving because with such a privileged role, comes responsibility, the responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead, and also when you are not.’
Onward!”
