David Fajgenbaum: Kazu Yoshizaki deserves the next Nobel Prize

David Fajgenbaum, Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, shared on X:

The doctor who deserves the next Nobel Prize created a life-saving drug and even tested it on himself!

Kazu Yoshizaki was studying Castleman disease when he developed a drug called tocilizumab. However, the ethics committee in Japan wouldn’t allow him to administer it to patients, questioning its safety. To prove its safety, Kazu took a bold step: he tested it on himself.

When I asked him about this, he clarified, ‘No, no, no, I didn’t give it to myself. The nurse gave it to me.’ Remarkably, this drug has saved the second most lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally developed for Castleman’s disease, tocilizumab stands as a testament to the power of medical research and the extraordinary commitment of one doctor.

We are so grateful to have Kazu on our Scientific Advisory Board to help guide Every Cure to repurpose treatments to reach the most patients possible.”
