What does quality cancer care mean for me? – Harold Cottin

What does quality cancer care mean for me? I must say, I don’t know. Is it about efficiency & duration of treatment? Security of medicines? Improvement of quality of life for patients?

I suppose it also depends on who you are, a patient, a healthcare professional, a policymaker… and where you are, in high-income countries or under-resourced settings.

I came with all theses questions today at the #wha76 side-event on Quality Cancer Care metrics, co-hosted by City Cancer Challenge and the Institute of Cancer Policy from King’s College.

The best experts in town were there: Richard Sullivan and Julie S. Torode from ICP, André Ilbawi from World Health Organization, Dr. Mary Nyangasi-Onyango from the Kenya Ministry of Health, ERIC KABISA from Rwanda Palliative Care and Hospice Organization, Amadou Diarra from Bristol Myers Squibb, Isabel Mestres and Jade Chakowa from C/Can.

We all know cancer is a complex disease that requires a multi-faceted response and available data is often fragmented or limited.

But, we can’t improve what we can’t measure!

To address this challenge, C/Can has joined forces with the Institute of Cancer Policy and the World Health Organization to develop a core set of quality indicators.

These metrics, that were presented during the event, will represent a critical step to support cities and policy makers to know what good looks like when it comes to quality cancer care. Very promising!
