Arif Kamal: The elimination of menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes could save between 324,000 to 654,000 lives over the next 40 years

Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer at American Cancer Society, recently shared on LinkedIn:

” ‘Lives cannot be saved from cancer without reducing tobacco use, and we cannot reduce tobacco use without eliminating menthol as a characterizing flavor.’

Published studies estimate that the elimination of menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes could save between 324,000 to 654,000 lives over the next 40 years, particularly in Black/African American populations for whom the harm is disproportionate.

We at American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) join 21 other prominent cancer fighting organizations to call on the White House to meet the Cancer Moonshot goals by finalizing the proposed FDA rule to eliminate menthol.”
