Shikha Jain: A troubling rise in CRC cases among younger adults
Shikha Jain, Founder and President of Women in Medicine and Women In Medicine Summit, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Kicked off the day rounding with our incredible team at the University of Illinois Cancer Center, caring for our amazing patients – and then headed over to support the UIC Flames as they took on Valparaiso. It was a great day capped off with an ESPN halftime interview, where I had the chance to talk about something critical: colorectal cancer screening.
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and colorectal cancer remains the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the U.S. While the risk increases with age, we’re seeing a troubling rise in cases among younger adults, making awareness and screening more important than ever.
For average-risk adults, screening starts at age 45, but if you have a family history or other risk factors, you may need to start even earlier. The good news is there are multiple options – from colonoscopy (the gold standard) to stool-based tests that can be done at home.
Screening saves lives. If you’re not sure which test is right for you, talk to your doctor – the most important step is to get screened.
And a special highlight of the day – catching up with UIC Chancellor Miranda, the ultimate UIC fan and champion, always showing up to support our Flames and our community.”
