“Voice of the families post 21: Sara and her father
Please meet Sara A. Dura. Sara is a 10-year-old girl from Omo Nada, Gudeta Bulla Kebele in Ethiopia. Sarah has been suffering from right-side facial swelling for the past three months. She was referred to Jimma University Medical Center which is about 100 km away from their home.
Upon arriving in the hospital in Jimma, her father was devastated by the diagnosis: Sara has cancer. In a desperate attempt to fund her treatment, he sold his only ox, which was crucial for their farming activities as it was shared among the community.
Mr. Hafiz shoulders the responsibility of caring for a large household, which includes his parents and eleven children.
Mr. Hafiz expresses gratitude for the treatment and service provided by Jimma University Hospital, as well as the support from Tesfa Addis Parents of Childhood Cancer (TAPCCO), a local philanthropic NGO that offers accommodation. However, the burden of Sara’s cancer affects the entire family deeply. Beyond the critical need for Sara’s cancer treatment, Mr. Hafiz and his family require additional support to sustain their livelihood and ensure the well-being of all family members.
Appropriate consent was given.”
