Beatrice Okumu: Enhancing cancer care through multidisciplinary teamwork in Kenya

Beatrice Okumu, City Manager-Nairobi at City Cancer Challenge, shared a post by Roselyne Okumu, University Lecturer
at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, adding the following on LinkedIn:

“Thank you Roselyne Okumu for your participation in planning and execution as a local expert representing oncology nurses in the just concluded Multidisciplinary Cancer Management Course, a collaboration of City Cancer Challenge and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and support of National Cancer Institute of Kenya. You contributed to great discussions on the role of oncology nurses and their involvement in MDTs.”

Quoting Roselyne Okumu’s post:

“Last week, I had the privilege of participating in a pivotal training event at Sarova Hotels in Nairobi, Kenya, focused on enhancing cancer care through multidisciplinary teamwork. This initiative was a collaboration between the City Cancer Challenge, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the National Cancer Institute of Kenya.

The training brought together all stakeholders in cancer management in Nairobi, fostering valuable discussions on improving the operations of Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) to enhance patient outcomes and survival rates. As part of the faculty, I had the honor of being on a panel discussing the role of MDT in the cancer care continuum. Sharing success stories from oncology nurses in Kenya. This session was chaired by my friend and colleague Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti.

The week included insightful meetings and a planning dinner, where I learned immensely from experts dedicated to reducing the global cancer burden Julie Gralow. I am grateful for their shared experiences in global health, hoping to learn more as we connect. Am thankful to the city manager Beatrice Okumu and C-CAN leadership both in Africa and globally for the amazing work across the cancer care continuum

Kudos Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti MGCNM(ONC),FWACN,MPH,RN, Rolando Camacho Beatrice Okumu City Cancer Challenge Abeid M. Athman Omar.”
