Akshaya Keerti: Let’s Talk About Health, Not Politics

Akshaya Keerti, International Council Deputy Director at Federation of Medical Students Association, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Let’s Talk about Health, Not Politics.

As a doctor, I feel compelled to address the ongoing discussions about the recent GST increase on caramelized popcorn and similar packaged foods.

While some are quick to politicize this move and troll Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, let’s focus on the facts and the greater good.

The decision to impose an 18% GST on caramelized popcorn is rooted in public health concerns, not politics.

Packaged and processed foods, especially those high in sugar, have been linked to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and other lifestyle diseases.

By taxing these items, the government is encouraging healthier choices and helping reduce the burden of preventable diseases on our healthcare system.

Globally, countries like Hungary and Ireland have implemented similar measures with remarkable success.

Hungary’s tax on sugary foods led to a 22% drop in energy drink consumption, while Ireland’s sugar tax has significantly reduced sugar intake among its population. These are tangible benefits, not political propaganda.

It’s disheartening to see meaningful health policies dismissed or mocked because of political biases.

Whether we agree with the ruling party or not, the focus should be on the health of our people.

Let’s appreciate steps that steer us toward better public health outcomes rather than degrade them with baseless criticism.

Health is beyond politics, and decisions like this are investments in the well-being of future generations.

Instead of trolling, let’s have a constructive conversation about how such measures can help create a healthier and more aware society.

What do you think?

Let’s discuss facts, not politics.”
