“Since Charli was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2020 at just 9 years old, the Gerrey Family and Shine Like Charli have worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the world of childhood cancer, and raise much needed funds for the charities that have supported their family along the way.
Last Saturday, they hosted their 3rd annual Shine Like Charli Gala Ball at the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach. It was an absolutely magical night. With an Alice in Wonderland theme, they shared how entering the world of childhood cancer is much like falling down the rabbit hole and never really quite knowing what’s around the corner.
Charli’s Mum Faye Hollands is incredibly passionate about making a difference for families who are facing their own childhood cancer battle, and we’re so lucky that passion led her to join Children’s Cancer Institute as our Family Relationships Lead.
We’d like to extend a huge thank you Sarah and Craig Wilkinson who bravely shared the story of their beautiful daughter Izzy who passed away from DIPG (brain cancer). Izzy touched the hearts of everyone in that room and you did a magnificent job sharing her spirit with us.
A big thanks also to Dr Noemi Fuentes Bolanos from the Institute who spoke about how the Zero Childhood Cancer Program is changing the course of childhood cancer treatment in Australia.
This year, Shine Like Charli were proud to donate 100% of their proceeds to support the incredible research happening here at Children’s Cancer Institute. In a tough economic climate, this amazing team were thrilled to raise a whopping $93,000.
We know how much work goes into every dollar raised in community events like this, so we are SO grateful to the organising committee for all their effort pulling this event together, and to all the businesses and individuals who donated prizes, bought tickets, bid for auction items or bought raffle tickets.
You are helping us to make a tangible difference in the lives of children fighting cancer… TODAY and into the future.”
