Arif Kamal: In the same breath you say “I love you”…don’t feel shy to finish that sentence with “get screened”
Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer at American Cancer Society, recently posted on LinkedIn:
”When you think about cancer screening, what image comes to mind?
A cold exam room? A skimpy gown? Maybe some moments of discomfort?
On this Valentine’s Day, I’d rather think about birthday candles, warm hugs, and thoughts of walking my daughter down the aisle. Because to me, cancer screening is about love. A love of life, a love for others, and a love for the possibilities that come from more tomorrows.
The American Cancer Society has this audacious campaign called ‘I Love You Get Screen’, because the message about cancer screening is one centered in the care and compassion for others. It’s about finding cancer early, so it’s easier to treat, or having some peace of mind amongst our busy lives and in a complex world. And it’s about normalizing the conversation, in the same way it’s normal to say “I love you” to someone.
On this Valentine’s Day, in the same breath you say ‘I love you’…..don’t feel shy to finish that sentence with ‘get screened’. It could save a life.”
