Patricia Shearer: This clinical trial set the stage for evolution of protocol-based therapy
Patricia Shearer, Founder and Owner of Vital Pediatrics for Complex Kids, LLC, made the following post on LinkedIn:
“Sir William Osler said that the “indicatio morbi” (reason for disease) in childhood acute leukemia did not exist. He recommended fresh air, a good diet, and freedom from worry to deal with what was considered to be an incurable condition.
In 1968 as a result of Total Study V at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 50 percent of children with acute leukemia obtained long term remission. This clinical trial set the stage for evolution of protocol-based therapy that has achieved a cure rate of over 90 percent in children diagnosed with the most common type of childhood cancer.”
