Loizos G. Loizou: A run of solidarity and compassion for all the children battling cancer and leukemia

Loizos G. LoizouSIOP Europe Ambassador for Children with Cancer, Professor at Medical School of University of Nicosia, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Dear friends and colleagues,

As I began running the Paris Marathon last Sunday, April 13, 2025, I felt deeply that this was not just an athletic challenge.

It was a run of solidarity and compassion, for all the children courageously battling cancer and leukemia, for their families, and for the power of hope.

The 42 kilometers of this journey were dedicated to those children who fight for their lives every day and who show us the true meaning of strength.

Wearing the jersey of the ELPIDA Foundation for Children and Adolescents with Cancer, I felt I was representing something far greater than myself:

Solidarity, care, and the belief that we can all make a difference.

This effort is part of the Cyprus International Action Plan for Childhood Cancer (Cy-IAPCC), a long-term initiative that seeks to bring real hope where it’s needed most.

It includes:

  1. Delivery of medicines and transfer of expertise to countries in need.
  2. Telemedicine services and palliative care for children.
  3. Public and professional education for prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment adherence.
  4. Collaboration with governments and international institutions.
  5. Research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of childhood cancer.

I ran to amplify the voices of children who are fighting for their lives, and also to raise the voice of Cyprus and the ELPIDA Foundation, who stand by them not only in Cyprus, but internationally.

And I remain committed to this journey of hope and action. Because our children deserve nothing less.

Because even a small country like Cyprus can deliver meaningful support and hope where it’s most needed.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support!”
