Ryan Holeywell: Using the power of social media to reach spanish-speaking communities
Ryan Holeywell, Executive Director of Mission Communications at The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Imagine facing a brutal diagnosis like cancer — and not being able to find the information you need in your language.
At The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society we believe everybody should be able to access the resources and care they need — regardless of where they live, how old they are, their background, what language they speak, or how much they earn.
Here’s the reality: Nearly 1 in 7 people in the U.S. speaks Spanish at home. That means hundreds of thousands of patients and caregivers are at risk of missing out on all that we offer if we don’t speak to them in their language.
But they aren’t missing out. And it’s not by accident. Frankly, I’m amazed at all the creative things my colleagues are doing to make LLS resources available to as many people as possible. Not only are we providing information in Spanish, but we’re doing so much more, like identifying key ways to reach these audiences and delivering information that meets their unique needs.
As my colleague Charoh Ortiz says, ‘We want people to know that we’re here, we support them, and we’re always looking for ways to reach out.'”
