Herbert Loong: Developing a timely lung cancer policy consensus for Asia Pacific region
Herbert Loong, Chair-Elect of the International Affairs Committee, reshared a post by ASPIRE for Lung Cancer on LinkedIn:
“Very happy to be able to partner with ASPIRE for Lung Cancer together with other national representatives and stakeholders including colleagues from Asia Pacific Coalition against Lung Cancer across the Asia Pacific to develop a timely lung cancer policy consensus for our region.
Hopefully we can leverage on expertise and experience from like-minded colleagues in region to consolidate our efforts to push these agendas forward with governments and policy makers.”
Quoting ASPIRE for Lung Cancer‘s post:
“Lung cancer remains a critical health challenge across APAC, requiring urgent and coordinated action. ASPIRE is proud to announce that, alongside Dr. Mary Bussell, PhD (Event Facilitator & Global Advisor) and Assoc. Prof. Herbert Loong Asia Pacific Coalition against Lung Cancer (Strategic Advisor), we will be convening The APAC Lung Cancer Policy Consensus Initiative.
This initiative is designed to drive regional consensus, strengthen stakeholder collaboration, and create real impact through policy change—building on both global momentum and regional insights.
Integrating expert recommendations from the Global Lung Cancer Consensus Statement (co-authored by Dr. Mary Bussell, PhD) and ASPIRE’s “Bridging the Gap” White Paper, a flagship report identifying key gaps and opportunities in lung cancer care across APAC, this initiative aims to shape policy priorities and empower participants to lead meaningful change.
With the global consensus ratified by the faculty and attendees of the 9th International Lung Cancer Network (Jun ‘23) and presented at the 5th Emirates Oncology Society Conference (Oct ‘24) and the 1st IASLC Pan-African Conference on Lung Cancer (Jan-Feb ‘25), it is gaining significant traction – making this a key moment to unite for action.
As part of this initiative, we will delve into the Global Consensus, examining its key insights, and work towards developing a regional consensus that reflects the unique challenges and opportunities in APAC lung cancer care.
We will be kickstarting the first of two workshops tomorrow, 18th March, where we will seek to focus and gain consensus on six critical pillars:
- Prevention
- Screening & Early Detection
- Diagnosis
- Access to Treatment
- Stigma Reduction
- Investments & Partnerships
The initiative will culminate in a launch event, where we will officially present the APAC Lung Cancer Policy Consensus to showcase collaboration among experts, policymakers, and key stakeholders, demonstrating a unified commitment to advancing lung cancer care. This is a defining moment for lung cancer advocacy in APAC. A stronger, united voice is forming—stay tuned as we shape the future of lung cancer care together!”
