Aaron Sverdlov: HMRI Australia’s first community information event on cardio-oncology

Aaron Sverdlov, Professor and Director of Heart Failure and Co-Director at Newcastle Centre of Excellence in Cardio-Oncology, shared his recent article on LinkedIn:

“Bridging the Gap in Cardio-Oncology: A Successful Community Q and A Session.

We were thrilled to host at Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) Australia’s first community information and Q and A event on cardio-oncology, aimed at raising awareness of heart health during and after cancer treatment. This session provided an invaluable opportunity for patients, families, and healthcare professionals to engage with experts and get answers to crucial questions about cardiovascular care in the oncology setting.

Doan Ngo set the scene by covering the background for the relationship between cancer, cancer treatment and heart health and then chaired our expert panel, which included:

  • A cardiologist and cardio-oncologist Aaron Sverdlov,
  • Medical and radiation oncologists, Faisal Hayat and Dr Philippa Ell,
  • A pharmacist, Joshua Bennetts and
  • A specialist nurse, Trent Williams

…all coming together to provide holistic insights into cardiovascular care for people living with and beyond cancer.

The session was incredibly well received, with over 100 attendees in person and more online! A special highlight was the inspiring addresses by Hon Jenny Aitchison, who shared her personal experience and expressed strong support for this initiative, and Heidi Janssen, sharing her personal and family experiences as well.

Key Takeaways:

  • Patients want (and need) more education on the intersection of heart health and cancer/cancer treatment.
  • There is a clear clinical unmet need in cardio-oncology, highlighting the importance of continued advocacy, dialogue and support.
  • Community engagement is crucial—this event was just the beginning, and we hope to make it a recurring initiative!

The overwhelmingly positive feedback speaks for itself—patients and families truly valued this session, emphasizing the need for ongoing education and advocacy in cardio-oncology.

A huge thank you to all who participated and helped make this event a success, most importantly our patients, their families and carers! We are very proud and grateful to our community, who came and shared their journeys with us!

Let’s keep the momentum going to ensure every patient receives the best possible care for both their heart and cancer health.

Thank you, HMRI, AstraZeneca, GSK and Race Oncology for your support.”
