Shahrin Ahmed: Squamous cell carcinoma can be prevented long-term with the help of new immunotherapy

Shahrin Ahmed, Medical specialist in oncology at the Canadian Cancer Society, shared a post on X:

“Preventing squamous cell carcinoma can be prevented long-term with the help of new immunotherapy.

CD4+ T helper cells, which are not typically used in traditional cancer treatments, are the first to be activated by this therapy, which is the first time it has been done. Similar immunotherapies are shown to have the potential to prevent other cancers throughout the body in this work.

The risk of developing multiple new lesions over time is increased for individuals who develop squamous cell carcinoma, which is a unique challenge. Prevention is a key component of care due to this.

The mechanism used by this drug combination to prevent cancer is different from those used by current immunotherapies, which suggests that these drugs may have different mechanisms for treating and preventing cancer.

The second most common skin cancer is Squamous Cell carcinoma (SCC). The likelihood of developing skin cancer is increased due to precancerous spots caused by sun damage, but removing individual spots does not significantly decrease the risk.

By combining vitamin D analog (calcipotriol) and chemotherapy (5-FU), researchers can activate the patient’s immune system and eradicate precancerous spots, preventing cancer occurrence.

In 7 out of 10 patients, the treatment successfully eliminated all facial lesions and 95% of precancerous spots on their faces. In the scalp, 82% of spots were cleared by the therapy, and in the upper extremities, 65 and 68 percent of the spots were cleared, respectively.

Redness and inflammation around spots were caused by side effects of the drug, but all skin reactions cleared up within four weeks of treatment. The immune response to the drug seemed to have no impact on healthy skin.

The aim of this study was to assess the long-term effectiveness and mode of action of this immunotherapy in patients with immune systems that are competent.”
