Carmen Monge-Montero: This year, my cancerversary felt extra special
Carmen Monge-Montero, Researcher and patient advocate with Youth Cancer Europe, shared on LinkedIn:
“11 years!
This year, my cancerversary felt extra special. Who would have told that young woman, leaving the hospital after her last chemo eleven years ago, that one day she would present her own children’s book ‘Can-Can and the adventure of Míng Island’ at the Inspire2Live Global Conference to help kids understand the cancer journey? She would never have believed it—especially because, back then, she was only writing short posts just for her own mental health.
It took many years of handling different emotions, meeting inspiring people, and getting amazing opportunities to make me realize this was possible. And that maybe my story and imagination could help someone else too.
I was also lucky to be part of a panel on ‘Patient Education and Awareness: An Example and the Way Forward.’ Along with other great speakers and our moderator Alejandra Mendez, I shared my experience with silent despair and ideas on how we can support the mental health of people living with cancer through better education.
Finally, I got to talk a little about what we do at Youth Cancer Europe , like our achievements this year—the Minimum Standards of Specialist Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Care Units and Recommendations for Equitable, Diverse, and Inclusive Cancer Care that we launched in the European Parliament. But more importantly, I shared how our organization is really about community and how together, we are stronger.
Thank you Piarella Peralta de Wesseling, Peter Kapitein, and Ilona Schelle for the invitation. Thank you Amsterdam Academy Press for helping me to publish Can-Can. I am looking forward to seeing where this is going.”
