Diogo de Sousa Neves: Improving access to Oncology Medicines in LMICS
Diogo de Sousa Neves, Program Manager at City Cancer Challange, posted on LinkedIn:
“Improving access to Oncology Medicines in low- and middle-income countries goes beyond availability and affordability. Achieving better health outcomes also requires focusing on how these medicines are delivered, underscoring the crucial role of service quality.
Due to the unique risks involved, proper handling of oncology medicines is essential to avoid or minimize errors that could significantly impact Patient Care and Health Workforce Safety. A health system that proactively addresses these risks is better equipped to deliver high-quality Cancer Care.
Last week, City Cancer Challenge, in collaboration with Ministerio de Salud Paraguay, hosted a workshop on best practices for safely handling oncology medicines. This capacity-building initiative brought together pharmacists, nurses, and oncologists from key institutions across Paraguay.
The workshop showcased the power of multidisciplinary collaboration in driving continuous Quality Improvement in key health services. Special thanks to Sandra Fontanals Martínez, Head of Pharmacy Services at Catalan Institute of Oncology, for sharing her expertise and valuable insights with the participants.
The experiences and best practices shared during the workshop will support shaping Paraguay’s national guidelines on safe handling of oncology medicines in clinical settings, ensuring an approach that aligns with global standards and is tailored to the local context.
This initiative builds on C/Can’s ongoing efforts to enhance quality of service delivery through the Readiness for Access to Oncology Medicines Programme. Special thanks to Direct Relief and Amgen for their partnership in delivering a comprehensive project on access to oncology medicines in Paraguay.”
