Paula Gordon: Already shown by Anna Wilkinson and Jean Seely that provinces that don’t screen till age 50 have higher rates of stages 2, 3 and 4 cancers than provinces that start at 40.

Paula Gordon, Breast Radiologist, Patient Advocate and Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia, made the following post on Twitter:

“Already shown by Anna Wilkinson and Jean Seely that provinces that don’t screen till age 50 have higher rates of stages 2, 3 and 4 cancers than provinces that start at 40. Aside from live saved and QOL for women with cancer, this study shows the huge cost savings possible.
The money saved by finding more cancers early (treatment of stage 4 as high as $500,000!) would go a long way to pay for screening starting at 40 across.
An important strength of the study was the expert panel members who contributed:Representation from radiology, pathology, surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, family medicine, pharmacy, cancer centre administration and cost modelling.
These same experts should be on the Canadian Task Force panel that decides what age to start and how often to screen for breast cancer, and when supplemental screening should be offered to women with dense breasts.”
