Bertalan Meskó: Game changer device for cancer patients got approval in the NHS

“Cancer patients struggle a lot not only with the medications they have to take and symptoms they have to endure, but the hundreds of micro-decisions they have to make alone about lifestyle or diet to medication management and easing side effects.

The less time they have to spent waiting at a hospital, the bigger the chance is that they could recover in peace at home.

One of these challenges for patients going through chemotherapy is checking and worrying about haemoglobin levels and total white blood cell count. It can be a source of a lot of anxiety. Blood tests after blood tests.

Now this device that can measure both got regulatory approval in the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom.

It would be a game changer. Here is what a patient said, she said it enabled her to be no longer so tied to a fixed schedule of hospital visits, which she found physically and mentally exhausting especially given her fear of needles.

The machine took all that away, it’s a simple finger prick that doesn’t hurt. It’s a small amount of blood and then it’s hidden away there’s no stress or anxiety.”
