A significant development in cancer care is the use of biomarkers. Besides their use for diagnostics, safety and therapy response evaluation they became extremely important as a tool for driving therapy options. Biomarkers are nothing new, but despite broad adoption in routine cancer care there is still room for improvement. In particular, I want to highlight the human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER) family, which have the potential to change the treatment paradigm for several cancers.
