Douglas Flora: Another example of a practical and impactful benefit of AI and pattern recognition

Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director, Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, recently posted on LinkedIn:

“Another exciting new article from our upcoming inaugural issue of AI in Precision Oncology!

No healthcare provider sets out to miss cancer, yet it happens every day. In fact, for every 120 chest CT scans ordered or read, one lung cancer will be missed. This is just one example of a systemic issue that needs to be addressed. Over a third of chest CT scans reveal an incidental pulmonary nodule (IPN), and the rate of malignancy for IPNs is approximately 5%. Unfortunately, follow-up care for IPNs fails in around 50% of cases.

But there is hope. By creating effective, efficient, scalable, and sustainable solutions, we can fix this problem. Let’s work together to improve the system and ensure that fewer cancers are missed.

After all, this issue affects not only patients but also our families and loved ones.

Another example of a practical and impactful benefit of AI and pattern recognition—why aren’t we all looking to common sense solutions like this in our hospitals?”
