Emad Shash: New open-access study Mapping cancer patient online support groups
Emad Shash, Leading Cancer Researcher and Director at National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Thrilled to share our new open-access study mapping Egypt’s Facebook cancer support communities—an essential step toward safer, smarter digital care.
What we discovered
21 % of groups met our quality and HCP-oversight criteria—0 % of community pages did.
Only 5.7 % of the 274 K group members are reached by verified medical guidance.
Meanwhile, 70 % of pages remain non-qualified, highlighting a huge information-trust gap.
Why it matters
With Facebook being used by 96% of Egyptian adults, digital spaces shape patients’ daily decisions. Our roadmap—clear qualification standards, admin training, and public–NGO–industry partnerships—can ensure every post delivers reliable, compassionate support.
