Carolyn Taylor: What Makes a Cancer Center “Comprehensive”?

Carolyn Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of Global Focus on Cancer (GFC), posted on LinkedIn:

“What Makes a Cancer Center “Comprehensive”?

Comprehensive cancer centers (CCCs) play a critical role in cancer control efforts, but there is no universal definition of what makes a center truly comprehensive. Our new paper examines:

  • How CCCs have evolved over time
  • The core attributes that distinguish them from other cancer centers
  • Their potential impact at patient, provider, system, and societal levels
  • The need for accountability, equity, and collaboration

Through a chronological scoping review, we found that CCCs worldwide share six interconnected attributes:

  1. Clinical service provision – Delivering optimal, person-centered, complex care
  2. Research, data, and innovation – Driving discovery and evidence-based care
  3. Education and clinical support – Training the next generation of cancer specialists
  4. Networks and leadership – Strengthening cancer care systems through partnerships
  5. Health equity and inclusiveness – Addressing disparities and ensuring access for all
  6. Accountability and governance – Measuring success and maintaining high standards

While CCCs have tremendous potential, they must continue to evolve, measure their impact, and drive health equity at local, national, and global levels. Our findings highlight key priority areas for future development and accreditation standards to ensure CCCs fulfill their role in cancer control efforts.

We’d love to hear your thoughts! What should we expect from a truly comprehensive cancer center?”
