People Are More: More Than a Diagnosis, More Than a Disease, More Than a Patient – Eduardo Pisani

On February 4, 2025, at the ELLOK 9th Conference, Mr. Eduardo Pisani delivered a powerful call to action that encapsulated his unwavering commitment to advancing person-centered cancer care.

His address, marked by a tone of hope and determination, emphasized the pressing need for collaborative and transformative efforts in cancer treatment and support.

Behind every cancer diagnosis is a unique human story. Stories of resilience, hope, grief, and healing.

People-centered care means seeing the whole person and meeting their unique needs with compassion and empathy. Cancer care should be person-centered, ensuring that every patient receives care aligned with their goals, their expectations, their needs, and their values. By making person-centered cancer pathways a reality, from prevention, early detection, treatment, survival, end-of-life care, we can improve outcomes not just for individuals but for the whole society.

Ultimately, person-centered cancer care can establish trusting relationships and improve the overall patient experience and outcomes. On World Cancer Day 2025 and beyond, we should continue to commit to work together to ensure that every person affected by cancer receives the care they deserve. We are united in our goals, unique in our needs.

People are more. More than a diagnosis. More than a disease. More than a patient.

This is actually a quote which I found a couple of days ago and which resonates with me and I wanted to share it with you. In closing, what are the changes that we think and we expect to make happen in order to achieve all these growth goals that have been outlined in this couple of days of writing? I will leave you with three carefully chosen words—words that I have reflected on deeply.

The first is MOBILIZATION. Mobilization is really what’s happening in Greece through ELLOK, and through each and every one. Mobilization is what brings the Ministers here and it is what makes new policies accelerate.

The second word is COLLABORATION. Leave alone the various networking opportunities that we all have through our respective organizations, but collaboration is what makes the policies and the theory become practice. So, this is where, shall we say, the legs are built on the theory.

And the same goes for the third word which is IMPLEMENTATION. Implementation is what we are now looking at in the next future and this is really what will make a difference in the life of people, in the life of patients”.
