Petra Ibum Adjah: Some warning signs of breast cancer

Petra Ibum Adjah, Communications Manager at Pink Africa Foundation, shared on LinkedIn:

“What Do You Do When You Find A Lump?

First off, don’t let fear consume you.

Next, don’t put off going to the doctor’s. This here, is why there’s an increase in cancer mortality rate.

Ignoring the lump, won’t magically cause it to disappear. Go get the lump evaluated immediately.

Whatever the prognosis, don’t get spooked and run off.
The earlier you get started with the recommended treatment(s), the better the outcome.

Some warning signs of breast cancer:

1. Lump on the breast or in the underarm.
2. Change in breast size.
3. Swelling, redness, hotness, darkening of the breast.
4. Rash, itchiness, soreness of the nipple or breast area.
5. Dimpling or puckering of the skin.
6. Nipple discharge.
7. Persistent breast pain.

In most cases, these may not be a sign of cancer but it is advisable to see a doctor immediately if these are experienced.

PS. A benign lump prognosis in the past, doesn’t mean the lump you just found is also a benign lump.

Remember early detection, early diagnosis and an early start on treatment ensures a good outcome.”
