Kashyap Patel on the impact of chronic stress on cancer and the healing power of meditation

Kashyap Patel, Medical Director of the International Oncology Network, Past President at Community Oncology Alliance, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Chronic stress has a profound impact on cancer development, involving intricate neuroendocrine mechanisms. The activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system triggers the production of stress hormones, which can stimulate tumor growth and affect tumor regulation.

These hormones also influence the immune system, prompting pro-tumorigenic immune cells to release cytokines like IL-6 and IL-10, impacting the tumor microenvironment. When combined with the global challenge of Long Covid affecting millions, the resulting inflammation may exacerbate long-term population health issues, potentially leading to a surge in new cancer cases and other post-Covid complications.

Furthermore, stress hormones can suppress tumor immunity by disrupting the balance of key cytokines such as IL-12 and IL-10, hampering cellular immunity essential for combating tumors. This chain of events highlights the significant impact of chronic stress on overall health, contributing to conditions like hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and heart attacks.

To counteract these adverse effects, incorporating practices like meditation, mindfulness, and non-judgmental witnessing can tap into our inherent healing abilities. By reducing stress levels and promoting self-healing, individuals can embark on a transformative journey towards a healthier and more balanced life. Let’s delve into these empowering strategies together to combat stress and pave the way to enhanced well-being.”
