“Today, we had the distinct honor of engaging in an enlightening conversation with Dr Ophira Ginsburg, a leading voice in the fight against gender disparities in healthcare. Our discussion delved into the critical insights from the recent Lancet Commission report on Women, Power, and Cancer, which Dr. Ginsburg co-chaired.

This groundbreaking report sheds light on the profound impact of cancer on women worldwide and outlines a bold vision for addressing the structural inequalities that hinder access to cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Key findings from the report highlight the stark reality that cancer ranks among the top three causes of premature mortality among women globally. Astonishingly, of the 2.3 million women who die prematurely from cancer each year, 1.5 million deaths could be averted through primary prevention or early detection strategies, with a further 800,000 deaths preventable if women everywhere could access optimal cancer care.

The report underscores the need for a nuanced, inclusive, and gender-transformative approach to cancer care. It proposes priority actions such as ensuring data on sex, gender, and sociodemographic factors are routinely collected and publicly reported, developing and enforcing laws and policies that reduce exposures to known cancer risks for girls and women, and ensuring equitable access to cancer research resources, leadership, and funding opportunities for women.
