The Paediatric Medicines Regulation must be amended to ensure that Pharma companies do develop their drugs for children too

In a post by KickCancer on Linkedin, it says, “To cure all children with cancer, we want to have a long-lasting impact both at the Belgian and European level to ensure swift and secure access to the best treatments.

This is why, together with doctors and researchers, we are aiming for several structural changes for 2023 ..

👉 the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) must be improved to avoid delays in useful data sharing while keeping the patients’ privacy safe

👉 the Paediatric Medicines Regulation  must be amended to ensure that Pharma companies do develop their drugs for children too when the science indicates that their drug can really help for paediatric cancer patients (i.e., translation of adult drugs into paediatrics)

👉 the Orphan Drugs Regulation has to be reviewed to foster and encourage drug development for children specifically with specific incentives for drugs aimed at rare paediatric diseases (i.e., first-in-child development)

👉 the implementation of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan must be tracked to ensure benefits for patients

👉 in Belgium, all standard of care drugs must be reimbursed by the social security when they are part of children’s standard of care

👉 and finally, in Belgium too, we want to step up the organisation of care for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer to meet their specific needs and ensure them the best chances of survival and quality of life, during and after treatment !

Is this a lot of work? Probably too much…but we are not alone because we work on all European matters with Childhood Cancer International – Europe and SIOP Europe, the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOPE) and in Belgium with BSPHO, the Belgian Society of Paediatric Haemato-Oncology! In teamwork we trust.”
