Svetlana Nikic: The importance of long-term follow-up and monitoring of cancer survivors
Svetlana Nikic, Founder of Precision Oncology Consulting, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“An excellent quick read on the importance of long-term follow-up and monitoring of cancer survivors.
A recently held conference in Slovenia highlighted the growing need for systematic, long-term monitoring of cancer survivors due to the increasing number of patients facing long-term side effects from treatment. These late effects can include cardiovascular problems, secondary cancers, and psychological/social challenges.
The experts emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and personalized, digitally supported follow-up plans, transitioning care from oncologists to primary healthcare professionals.
A key point was the significant economic burden of these late effects, with over half of cancer-related costs attributed to managing them (e.g., sick leave, early retirement). This is why the system needs to invest more in cancer prevention, early cancer detection and in general more comprehensive care.
The conference called for the development of follow-up guidelines for adult survivors, similar to existing programs for childhood cancer survivors, to ensure equal access to care and improve long-term health and quality of life.
