Pat Garcia-Gonzalez: Access to cancer treatment is a human rights issue
Pat Garcia-Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer at The Max Foundation, shared the following post on LinkedIn:
“‘Even if you sell your soul to the devil…’
Cancer touches everyone. Most of us know from experience how it feels to hear that we or our loved one has cancer. Now imagine being also told that there is a treatment that could help you, but the treatment is not available in your country. I recall a young woman from Paraguay who shared that her doctor told her: “Even if you sell your soul to the devil, you will not be able to access the medicine that could treat your cancer.”
Access to cancer treatment is a human rights issue. Millions of people around the world today lack the resources and services they need to prevent, detect, and treat cancer. On World Cancer Day, I shout out loud to amplify the voice of those who are in urgent need of treatment today and who are waiting and hoping for us to help them.
I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with likeminded individuals through The Max Foundation and focus our efforts on those who need help urgently today.
We must close the cancer care gap. Geography should not be destiny, and together we can make the impossible possible.”
