Hil Moss: Three high-level takeaways from Cancer Facts and Figures report
Hil Moss, the Co-Founder/CEO of VivorCare, recently shared on LinkedIn:
“This week, the American Cancer Society released its 2024 Cancer Facts and Figures report, which is a treasure trove of information for those of us that work in the cancer space. It’s a meaty report, and I recommend digging in, but I was struck by three high-level takeaways:
1. The cancer mortality rate continues to go DOWN, which is a remarkable achievement. Death from cancer has decreased 33% since 1991, averting 4.1 million deaths over the past thirty years.
2. The incidence of cancer, however, continues to rise. For the first time this year, 2 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer. Two. Million. That is 5,480 a day.
3. This one is perhaps the most surprising (hence its media coverage in the past few months): the cancer patient population as a whole is getting YOUNGER, not older. Experts are still trying to understand the concerning increase in young diagnoses, particularly in cancers such as breast and colorectal.
With the incredible advances in novel therapeutics and early detection, there is a lot to feel hopeful about. But the numbers speak for themselves—this is a challenge of epic proportions. And if you or your loved ones have been impacted by this disease, you are so, so not alone.
